| You Reap What You |
You Reap What You
The man slowly looked up.. This was a woman clearly accustomed to the finer things of life. Her coat was new. She looked like she had never missed a meal in her life. His first thought was that she wanted to make fun of him, like so many others had done before.. "Leave me alone," he growled... To his amazement, the woman continued standing. She was smiling -- her even white teeth displayed in dazzling rows.
"Are you hungry?" she asked.
"No," he answered sarcastically. "I've just come from dining with the president.. Now go away."
The woman's smile became even broader. Suddenly the man felt a gentle hand under his arm. "What are you doing, lady?" the man asked angrily. "I said to leave me alone. Just then a policeman came up. "Is there any problem, ma'am?" he asked..
"No problem here, officer," the woman answered. "I'm just trying to get this man to his feet. Will you help me?"
The officer scratched his head. "That's old Jack. He's been a fixture around here for a couple of years. What do you want with him?"
"See that cafeteria over there?" she asked. "I'm going to get him something to eat and get him out of the cold for awhile."
"Are you crazy, lady?" the homeless man resisted. "I don't want to go in there!" Then he felt strong hands grab his other arm and lift him up. "Let me go, officer. I didn't do anything.."
"This is a good deal for you, Jack," the officer answered. "Don't blow it." Finally, and with some difficulty, the woman and the police officer got Jack into the cafeteria and sat him at a table in a remote corner. It was the middle of the morning, so most of the breakfast crowd had already left and the lunch bunch had not yet arrived.
The manager strode across the cafeteria and stood by his table. "What's going on here, officer?" he asked.."What is all this, is this man in trouble?"
"This lady brought this man in here to be fed," the policeman answered.
"Not in here!" the manager replied angrily. "Having a person like that here is bad for business."
Old Jack smiled a toothless grin. "See, lady. I told you so. Now if you'll let me go. I didn't want to come here in the first place"
The woman turned to the cafeteria manager and smiled. "Sir, are you familiar with Eddy and Associates, the banking firm down the street?" "Of course I am," the manager answered impatiently. "They hold their weekly meetings in one of my banquet rooms."
"And do you make a goodly amount of money providing food at these weekly meetings?"
"What business is that of yours?"
I, sir, am Penelope Eddy, president and CEO of the company." "Oh..."
The woman smiled again.. "I thought that might make a difference." She glanced at the cop who was busy stifling a laugh. "Would you like to join us in a cup of coffee and a meal, officer?"
"No thanks, ma'am," the officer replied. "I'm on duty."
"Then, perhaps, a cup of coffee to go?"
"Yes, ma'am. That would be very nice."
The cafeteria manager turned on his heel. "I'll get your coffee for you right away, officer."
The officer watched him walk away. "You certainly put him in his place," he said. "That was not my intent... Believe it or not, I have a reason for all this.."
She sat down at the table across from her amazed dinner guest. She stared at him intently.
"Jack, do you remember me?"
Old Jack searched her face with his old, rheumy eyes. "I think so -- I mean you do look familiar."
"I'm a little older perhaps," she said. "Maybe I've even filled out more than in my younger days when you worked here, and I came through that very door, cold and hungry."
"Ma'am?" the officer said questioningly. He couldn't believe that such a magnificently turned out woman could ever have been hungry.
"I was just out of college," the woman began. "I had come to the city looking for a job, but I couldn't find anything. Finally I was down to my last few cents and had been kicked out of my apartment.. I walked the streets for days. It was February and I was cold and nearly starving. I saw this place and walked in on the off chance that I could get something to eat."
Jack lit up with a smile. "Now I remember," he said. "I was behind the serving counter. You came up and asked me if you could work for something to eat. I said that it was against company policy."
"I know," the woman continued. "Then you made me the biggest roast beef sandwich that I had ever seen, gave me a cup of coffee, and told me to go over to a corner table and enjoy it. I was afraid that you would get into trouble. Then, when I looked over and saw you put the price of my food in the cash register, I knew then that everything would be all right."
"So you started your own business?" Old Jack said.. "I got a job that very afternoon. I worked my way up. Eventually I started my own business that, with the help of God, prospered.." She opened her purse and pulled out a business card. "When you are finished here, I want you to pay a visit to a Mr. Lyons. He's the personnel director of my company. I'll go talk to him now and I'm certain he'll find something for you to do around the office." She smiled. "I think he might even find the funds to give you a little advance so that you can buy some clothes and get a place to live until you get on your feet. If you ever need anything, my door is always open to you."
There were tears in the old man's eyes. "How can I ever thank you?" he asked.
"Don't thank me," the woman answered. "To God goes the glory. He led me to you."
Outside the cafeteria, the officer and the woman paused at the entrance before going their separate ways.. "Thank you for all your help, officer," she said.
"On the contrary, Ms. Eddy," he answered. "Thank you.. I saw a miracle today, something that I will never forget. And..And thank you for the coffee." Have a Wonderful Day. May God Bless You Always and don't forget that when you "cast your bread upon the waters," you never know how it will be returned to you. God is so big He can cover the whole world with his Love and so small He can curl up inside your heart.
When God leads you to the edge of the cliff, trust Him fully and let go.
Only 1 of 2 things will happen, either He'll catch you when you fall, or He'll teach you how to fly!
The power of one sentence! God is going to shift things around for you today and let things work in your favor. You Reap What You

| Public Relations- The Power of Taking Initiative |
In my short time in the PR industry, I have learned that common sense pretty much overrules much of what is learned in the classroom. Common sense in figuring out what to do next, how to react in a situation, how to contact people, how to stay connected, etc. I currently have a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, yet I am working on my Master’s degree in Advertising. Although school has given me the technical resources behind how to work, it has not taught me the in’s and out’s of exactly how to get in the industry, how to get clients, and how to go about staying on top of the game. It’s simple- take initiative. Do not be afraid to jump in a project, even though you may have absolutely no clue what to do. Ultimately, you will figure it out.
First step to when you are given a project, get specifics from your client. What exactly is your client looking to get accomplished? What are their short term goals and long term goals for their project? Of course every client wants the same thing- to get his or her name out in the public. However, there has to be a starting ground first. Figure out what steps you can go into helping the client’s brand and image.
Second, brainstorm numerous ideas for your client’s goals. Sit down, create some mind maps, think of who to contact, possibly make some phone calls to get connected with others, etc. One thing I have learned is to not always rely on google for your answers. Be creative, think outside the box. What has not been done yet that you can do? Brainstorm numerous marketing and PR strategies that will begin to put your client in the position that he or she can become the “top dog” in the industry. Third, put together a concrete plan. Present your ideas of how exactly you can go about putting your client in the spotlight. Make sure your ideas are coherent, accurate, and solidified. They can always be changed, but make sure you have a starting point. Show your client a timeline of when you can start making these things happen, when do you believe your actions will take place? Be specific, listen to your client’s ideas as well, and everything will come together.
Lastly, take action! Start making those phone calls, setting up meetings, fundraisers, get in touch with sponsors, e-mail, write up some proposals– WORK! Do not be afraid to toss yourself in these situations where you have no clue what to do and who to contact. Begin from your brainstorming and continue to work your way up. Look at the websites of people you can contact, utilize your resources, talk to others, just continue to work. Remember, publicists are human, we do make mistakes and we are at one time or another going to mess up. However, take your mistake for what it is, and keep on moving. Just do not slack off and pretend like you are working. It will definitely show through your work. Taking initiative is definitely a HUGE aspect of this large industry. All publicists are looking to get in where they can fit in, no matter they do or don’t know. Your hard work, grinding, and constant pushing will lead you and your client to great places.

| Explore The Edge |
| So, in case you're hesitating to explore the edge, here are four comforting questions to help you move forward.
- Who else has done it? You may think you're in unexplored territory, but it's unlikely that you're trying something no one else has ever tried. Look around to find others who have explored the same edge that you might be anxious about. Whether your comfort zone ends at the edge of learning a new skill, speaking in public, making a financial investment, expressing your feelings, or quitting a bad habit, someone else has been at that very same edge. That person can help support you, prepare you, and encourage you to win.
- Can I dip my toe in first? No one says you have to hurl yourself headlong into every new endeavor. Try it out first. Start small. When you reflect on the first time you tried anything new (leading, speaking, rock climbing, painting, playing a musical instrument), you probably remember how uncomfortable you felt. But you stepped out and did it, and you soon discovered that it wasn't as hard as you had expected, right? After a while, what was once the edge became your comfort zone as you built your competence—and competence builds confidence.
- How bad can it be? Often, the fear in your mind paints a darker picture of things outside your comfort zone than is really the case. Remember, the victory is in the exploration itself more than the success of your attempt. Thomas Edison said, "Genius? Nothing! Sticking to it is the genius. I've failed my way to success."
- How great can it be? Your dreams are usually bigger than your comfort zone. You must be so passionate about your dream that, instead of feeling that you have to leave your comfort zone, you are magnetically drawn to the edge.

| Inspiration Moment |
| Build your own BEST team – Buddies who Encourage Success and Truth. Take some time to review your life and think of people who have made a difference for you and for whom you have made a difference.
Choose wisely those you want on your team. Ensure they offer the energy, truth and positive perspective you need for the success you want. There is no better test than time when it comes to relationships, so start small and build your BEST team slowly. The key is to connect with your BEST team, individually or as a group, on a consistent basis.
Depending on the relationship, we can play the role of teacher and/or student. In either role, we all need people who will support our success. Your BEST team can help you:
- Move through adversity. They can help your prevent the natural paralysis that adversity can trigger.
- Hone your self-awareness. Depend on your team to give you truthful, constructive feedback to keep beliefs based in reality.
- Affirm that your thoughts, words and actions are aligned with your goals.
- By letting you help them. As the Proverb says, "In teaching others, we teach ourselves."
- Combat negative input you might be receiving at home or work. I love this quote from my Orchestrating Attitude book by an unknown source, "When you are in a bad mental state, think of your mind as a bad neighborhood. Don't go in there alone."
- Rehearse challenging situations with friends before you have a live performance.
Remember, having a BEST team is about give and take. Don't give help in hopes of getting something in return… that's trading not giving. There is no scorekeeping on a BEST team if everyone keeps a servant attitude. In the words of Zig Ziglar himself, "You can get everything in life you want if you will just help enough other people get what they want."
Give your BEST and you will get the BEST! |
